What Are You Wearing?

Last night in my geology class (yeah, that's right...don't make fun of me) my group members switched our research project from volcanos to earthquakes. As everyone was discussing what we could do for the project, my contribution was, "I can wear my Hope for Haiti tee!". It must have still been on my mind this morning while getting dressed because it was all I could think of to wear. Today I'm wearing

-To Haiti with Love tee
-Current/Elliott cropped skinnies
-LnA black Scoop Neck tee
-Black Hunter Wellies

What Are You Wearing?

I absolutely hate out of season weather. Not because of the sunshine, people finally going outside or the drum player serenading me outside of the store. I hate it because my instincts tell me not to dress in clothes that don't involve five different layers, Uggs and jeans. However, I refuse to look the part of a junior high girl with my shorty shorts, flip flops, tank top and pasty white skin on the first day of April in Wisconsin. So, I compromised and didn't wear full Uggs, real denim or long sleeves. Today I'm wearing:

-Current/Elliott Cropped Skinnies in Bluebell
-LnA Zipper Pocket Tee
-Splendid Cardi
-Ugg Dakotas
-An assortment of House of Harlow jewelry

Notes On: Pants

Though most of the comments I make regarding my distain for wearing pants are facetious, I really have taken somewhat of a hiatus from wearing the garment. The pieces that I once couldn't get through the week without wearing (Current/Elliott bf jeans, Acne skinnies and my old Gap camouflage cargos) were collecting dust on the top-most shelf of my closet while I rocked leggings, skirts and dresses for the duration of the dark season. Then came the fall runway shows, and suddenly it appeared the fashion world was once again obsessed with pants. Fixated on pleated trousers from Ann Demuelemeester, leather crop pants at Isabel Marant and velvet at Alexander Wang (which I'm sure I'll come to love by the time they hit the retail floor), I was inspired to pull down my old faves and create some updated looks. In anticipation of what I'm predicting to be the summer of many things including pants, I am offering you a list of the looks I plan to wear in heavy rotation:

1. Acne Gin Chinos in navy rolled at the ankle with an Alexander Wang Classic T and driving flats

2. Current/Elliott Captain Trousers in army (coming soon!) with a beater and my C/E Bomber Vest

3. Splendid Harem Pants with a worn in t-shirt and my trusty Acne jean jacket

What Are You Wearing?

After waking up 30 minutes late this morning, I threw on the first outfit I saw and ran to Atticus....and of course I didn't realize I had unintentionally paid homage to Nicole Richie. Today I'm wearing:

-Urban Outfitters black crow dress
-Current/Elliott jean jacket
-black tights
-Frye Paige boots

And if you're wondering, I totally wore this outfit before she did.

Notes On: Dressing for the Kill

Someone who has always walked a fine line between being an admirable mentor and ruining my life once instructed me to add deer hunting as an interest on my resume. Whether he really thought it would be an interesting talking point for an interview or was hoping that I would humiliate myself, I'll never know. Either way, hunting is definitely not an interest of mine. Sportsmanlike style, however, has always seemed to peak my interest. Not surprisingly, the first and only time I accompanied my dad on a deer-hunting trip, I was far more concerned with my outfit than the game. Choosing to forego the traditional orange attire, I wore my matching neon pink jacket and snow pants and carried an equally bright "handbag" filled with a thermos of hot cocoa, a rubix cube and a box of Girl Scout cookies. (editor's note: I was in the fourth grade.) Neon colors and Thin Mints aside, I've found traditional English hunting clothes quite inspiring lately. The vests at Rag&Bone and Boy by Band of Outsiders for Fall 2010 are incredible layering pieces, and who doesn't love plaid? In anticipation of the Fall trend, here are some hunting inspired pieces to start mixing into your wardrobe:

What Are You Wearing?

It doesn't really matter what I'm wearing today because I definitely spilled half my delicious Bradbury's Flat White all over it. But I'm happy to share it with you anyway:

-an old tank top from Banana Republic
-a Marc Jacobs scarf (a gift from my boss in NYC)
-black riding boots

What are you wearing? Let's hope it's not splattered with coffee stains!

Notes On: The Moto Trend

I've been feeling a strong aversion toward dresses and anything that could possibly be described as feminine or sweet since the end of 2007 (for reasons I shouldn't go into on something as widely read as the Atticus Shop Blog). Lucky for me, the fashion world has been feeling the same edgy mood. Motorcycle styles started popping up on fashion's radar when we all started to pay attention to Christophe Decarnin's revival of Balmain around spring of 2008. Similar styles began popping up in my closet not long after, beginning with black Frye Engineer Boots. Leather, studs and fringe quickly became must have details, and suddenly dressing like the chain-smoking, Harley-Davidson driving, forty something grandmother at the local tavern was considered chic! Sorry, that reference may only apply to those who have spent time in small town Wisconsin. If that doesn't completely turn you off from the moto trend, you'll be happy to know that it's still on point for FW09! My current faves include the Faux Fur Motorcycle Vest from Charlotte Ronson (which will be available on atticusshop.com next week), the High-Waisted Leather Shorts from Charlotte, Current/Elliott's Skinny Jean in Overcast Destroy and the Hex in Cash from Acne Jeans. Even though the leather and hardware details can often get pricey, there's no need to worry. From what I've seen, motorcycle trends are continuing into SS10 (think acid wash leather vests, studded belts and destroyed denim), so thankfully, there is no need to pull out those ruffled dresses and bow blouses from the bowels of your closet anytime soon!

What Are You Wearing?

I chose today as the day to debut my Fall treat to myself: a recycled fox fur vest! It's my first fur, and I would like to stress to all of you animal rights people out there that it is RECYCLED. I'm not sure exactly what it's recycled from, but I know for certain that, as a wise person once put it, "no additional foxes were harmed in the making of this vest."

Anyway, today I'm wearing:

-Aude burnout tee
-Frye engineer boots
-Daryl K *recycled* fox fur vest

The Docket: 10.2.09

The shortlist of what Atticus is currently obsessing over.
Watch: The September Issue. The documentary about Anna Wintour, editor in chief of Vogue, is a must see. If you're in Madison, it's playing at Sundance. If you're in NYC, it's at the Sunshine or any Loews theatre.

Listen: Atticus featured songs from Cage the Elephant and Sia in our behind the scenes video (available for viewing online soon!). We can't stop playing "Ain't No Rest For the Wicked" and the CSS remix of "Buttons".

Wear: Anything you can snag from the freshly stocked Sale Racks at Atticus. Our top picks are The Boyfriend in Washed Out Hickory from Current/Elliott for women and The M001 in Harlem from Simon Miller for dudes.

The Justification: Rain Drops on Roses and Wearing Hunter Wellies...These are a Few of My Favorite Things

It's ridiculously wet and gloomy in Madison today, and only one good thing is coming from it...wearing Hunter Wellies! In honor of such a dreary day, here are my picks for what will make your rainy day a little less grey.

Justification #1: Making a funny comment about the name of these is just way too easy. But they are still amazing! Moving on...

Justification #1: When I think about corduroy, I think "mom pants". However, the Current/Elliott version is definitely too skinny to be in fear of falling into the category. Sorry Mom!

Justification #1: I can't think of a comment witty enough to grace one of my justifications, so I'll just leave you with a fit tip about these babies.

**FIT TIP: These jeans are made from a very thin denim and are meant to be worn more like a legging than a jean. We recommend wearing them with tunics and longer tops.

Notes On: Making Grey Work

I always seem to find myself dealing with grey whether it's discovering that everything in my closet is a variation of grey, reading The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde or being in a grey area in my relationship. The problem with grey material, whether it's regarding your wardrobe or labeling your relationship, is that it's full of uncertainty. A tempting departure from the safe (black and white), grey clothing can be just as terrifying as refusing to set boundaries in your relationship. But rest assured, with a few tips from an expert of charting grey territory, it's definitely doable.

Let's begin with the different shades of grey. Just trying to keep the names straight (charcoal, heather, cement, steel, cloud, grey, gray, clay) is enough to send you flying back into the arms of boring black. It's important to remember that when you're dealing with grey there are no rules. It doesn't matter what you call it, with grey, anything goes. You can mix a lighter shade of grey with a darker shade of grey or mix a medium grey with a pop color like peony or chartreuse. You can make any decision you like regarding grey, as long as you're confident about it. Otherwise, you'll find yourself feeling awkward the entire time and wishing you hadn't branched out. You can wear grey to a business lunch, shopping with your friends or to cocktails with someone who isn't your boyfriend (and you don't even have to feel guilty about it because you banished boundaries, remember?!).

So, let's recap. Only make the decision to wear grey if you promise that you're going to be confident in your choice. Then give in to the temptation to mix greys and to combine grey with other colors. Forget any rules you've ever been told, and I promise you will learn to love grey.

The Justification: Music Day

Handmade Journals
I'm in a musical mood....just go with it

Justification #1: These journals are one of a kind and made with love

Justification #2: You never know what music/advertisement/types of paper/absurdities you'll find cover to cover

Journals not available online. Call 608.204.9001 to order

J- j- j- jaded
There aint no baby please
When I'm shootin' the breeze with her

Justification #1: The Amsterdam gives you a great fitting tee, without having to suck in

Blue jean baby....LA lady

Justification #1: Still obsessing.
(Duh, these aren't blue jeans, but they're my favorite right now. And Current/Elliott's made in CA, which will practically make you an LA Lady.)

Oren Katz Bracelets

Just bead it, bead it

Justification #1: Each bracelet is handmade

Justification #2: Some have charms and others are accented with sparkly beads

You know that we are living in a material world and I am a material girl.. Too much stuff to name/reference/I'm too lazy.

The Justification: Back to School Outfits

Presenting my perfect 1st day of school outfit...unfortunately, it doesn't include my Barbie and the Rockers lunchbox and backpack.

Justification #1: I'm in love.
Justification #2: I think the outfit, not the books, makes me look studious.

Sorry it's a spontaneous photo shoot picture of me, but you get the idea of how amazing this outfit is together. Not all of the merchandise has been photographed yet but it will be up on the site by early next week for your enjoyment! (And yes, I know I already did an Ode to Wang, but this piece is new, cool and I'm obsessed)

Since I'm dreading going back to school this week, I might as well present the couple things that are keeping me from slipping into depression.

Justification #1: Ashley Watson bags are made from leather jackets and are big enough to fit my millions of books for school.

Justification #2: We also carry bags that the guys will love. They're so unisexy.

Right now, I'm having an internal conflict deciding between the Brant in Butter and the Teal in Olive.
So, my suggestion is that someone buys one of those two and make my mind up for me!

Justification #1: They're comfortable, versatile, and the zipper makes them flattering since people look at that and not your thighs.

Prepare to see me in leggings pretty much everyday, fellow Edgewoodies.

Kova&T Monks Dress

Justification #1: Since this dress is just a little too short on it's own, my new favorite idea is making leggings into biker shorts! It makes not wearing pants a little less risque. (Probably not with a pair from Atticus though...they're way too good to destroy!)

8.17.2009

The Justification: Current/Elliott Natural Destroyed Boyfriend Jean

Justification #1: They're effortless and edgy

Justification #2: Add leggings underneath to transition into fall and early spring

Not to mention you'll be channeling your inner Gisele, who apparently also likes shredded denim
(NOTE: If you're wondering, we do not sell these at Atticus)
